The Ross Carroll Bennett House

This gracious home of a past era with its detail of the period and original amenities is an experience. Live the lifestyle of our forefathers. The Heritage Society of Washington County owns this grand home that has been designated a Texas Historic Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission. The 2-story Victorian structure was built of cypress wood, scored to simulate stone. It has ten rooms, furnished with original family and period antiques, and a third-floor attic once the site of festive parties and dances. The attic is not currently finished out, but would serve so many purposes that the sky is the limit.

The home’s interior has abundant Victorian details including leaded stained glass windows with jeweled inset, original fretwork, circular alcoves, and original wood floors. Of special note are the petticoat mirror in the entry hall, the carved rosewood square grand piano, and the five-piece turn-of-the-century dining room suite.

The Ross-Carroll home is one of the most interesting homes you will see. Built in 1899 by Mary (Dwyer) Ross on land inherited from her father, Thomas Dwyer. Matilda (Ross) Carroll inherited the house in 1941 and it remained in the family until 1970 when the Bennett family purchased the home.Their heirs, David and Bill Bennett, donated the home to the Heritage Society of Washington County in 2012.

Steeped in history, this home is significant to the Brenham area. This is an architectural masterpiece with features that are rare. Queen Anne Victorian style house features ornamentation in its open tower, a second level porch with horseshoe arches and jigs with friezes and brackets. Built of cypress this home has stood the test of time. Standing on a corner lot this home is significant and noticed by passersby.

The furnishings which are in the home at this time are included in the sales price and many are original to the home. An inventory of the furniture is available.

Come see this wonderful landmark and enjoy the past as today's reality.
